Funded and guided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Consortium provides a framework in which organizations and individuals can unite as one powerful force to fight the significant cancer burden in our state.

The Kentucky State Fair will be held August 14th - 24th at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Lousiville. Every year medical professionals from across the state come together to collaborate their services into a single, convenient location for citizens of Kentucky. Medical professionals at the "Health Horizons" exhibit will provide health screenings, information, and plenty of free samples to help promote healthier lifestyles. he Super Colon is an incredible, inflatable, interactive colon that teaches people about the risks, symptoms, prevention, early detection and treatment options for colorectal cancer. Visitors get a close-up view of a healthy tissue, tissue with non-malignant colorectal dieases, as well as tissues with various stages of colorectal cancer. Kentuckians will have four opportunities to view the Super Colon exhibit: August 23rd, 11am - 2pm, at Lexington Legends Applebees Park on 207 Legends Lane in Lexington; August 30th, 31st and September 1st at Jefferson Mall in Louisville, KY. The exhibit is sponsored by the Prevent Cancer Foundation, UK HealthCare, and the Colon Cancer Prevention Project. For more information, call UKHealthCare at 1-800-333-8874.
The Kentucky Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program, in partnership with the Tobacco Prevention Enhancement Site and in collaboration with the Kentucky Cancer Consortium, is hosting a Summit entitled "Midwest Academy: Direct Action Organizing" on September 4-5, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Lexington. The 2-day event will include programming from the Midwest Academy, a leading national training institute which looks to advance movements for social change by teaching a strategic, rigorous, results-oriented approach to social action and organization building.

The Northern Kentucky Cancer Coalition is hosting a one day educational training conference entitled: "Women and Smoking" on Tuesday, September 16th at the Florence Government Center in Florence, KY. This training is designed to educate nurses, social workers, and other health care providers about the effects of smoking on women's cancer, regarding disease processes, cross-generational effects and issues related to addiction. 3-hours CEs for nurses and social workers for all-day attendance. 2008 Howard L. Bost Memorial Health Policy Forum will be held Tuesday, September 16, 2008 in the Lexington Convention Center. The forum, entitled, "Reshaping America's Health Care: Putting People First", will feature keynote from Beverley Johnson, President and CEO of the Institute for Family-Centered Care, as well as informative panel presentations, break-out sessions, and a conversation on the Presidential Candidate's positions on Health Care. "Frontiers in Pain Management" is the 19th Annual Meeting of the Alliance of State Pain Initiatives will be held Thursday, October 30th through Saturday November 1st at the Hilton Austin in Austin, TX. . This unique, interdisciplinary national forum brings together leaders involved in efforts to address the diverse challenges that impede effective pain control. Participants will be bale to share resources and expertise, network with one another, and gain the knowledge and motivation to develop and implement programs to improve the care of persons with pain. The Appalachia Community Cancer Network (ACCN) is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded research initiative working to reduce cancer health disparities in the Appalachian region through community participation in education, research, and training. ACCN serves the Appalachian regions of Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. ACCN is currently requesting applications from community partners for funding of up to $2,500 each to support evidence-based and evidence-informed cancer education and outreach projects. Approximately, seven proposals will be funded during this grant period. Grant apllications are due Friday, August 22, 2008 by 5 p.m. For more details, read this Word document.
The Visionary Grants Program of the Ulman Cancer Fund For Young Adults is designed to cultivate the next generation of community-based outreach and support programs for this often overlooked population in the cancer community. Each program will receive $5,000 for implementation during this funding cycle. Next year, each of the funded programs will be eligible to receive $2,500 to $5,000 for evaluation. Leukemia & Lymphoma Society The Society may award up to $30,000 for one or two workshops each year that will significantly impact the prevention, diagnosis or management of leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma. The funds are awarded to the applicant’s institution. Applications may be submitted at any time and are reviewed within four weeks.
