- The Kentucky Center for Smoke-Free Policy's annual spring Smoke-free Conference will be Thursday, March 25, at the Doubletree Hotel in Lexington. The agenda will include: using the Constitution to frame smoke-free arguments; detailing the differences between lobbying and advocacy; how to create a tipping point in smoke-free efforts; using branding in smoke-free campaigns and many other important issues related to smoke-free policy. The conference is a great way to share ideas with health advocates and policymakers and learn what tactics have helped shape successful smoke-free campaigns. Registration information will be released as soon as details are finalized.
- Pregnant Smokers:
A new program to reduce the number of pregnant women who smoke produced positive results during its first year, Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) has reported. The program was developed by the DPH and the University of Kentucky. Read the press release.
- Kentucky Colon Cancer Screening Act (HB 415):
Gov. Beshear signed HB 415 into law on April 15, 2008 in Frankfort. This bill established a colon cancer screening program within the Kentucky Department of Public Health to provide screening services to uninsured individuals age 50 to 64 and others at high risk. HB 415 also calls for an awareness campaign to educate Kentuckians about the new service.See details of the bill.
